Oh for God's sake, lighten up, Francis!

Projection Design Meeting

Emily, Jake and Akari in attendance...

- Moment title images
o The three of us agreed that we want to have moment titles by themselves, not with “Moment” attached
o Silent movie title cards? Specific border and font. “Calm” not “distracting”…Found font…maybe a little sci-fi?
- Ideally 3 projectors, one with title images, the other two with images from text
- No pictures clearly from Google images, stylize somehow
- Maybe with Fred Phelps all projectors used, taking over background of scene
- Question of showing real people like Matt, Aaron, Russell
o Not the “Matthew Shepard Project,” showing him as saintly, perfect not accomplishing anything
o When and why would we be using Russ/Aaron?
o Projecting Russ or Aaron’s face over Ethan’s,
- Projecting images of Angels, covering Fred Phelps
- Actors interacting with projections, directors can decide
- “Gem City of the Plains” – video of news reports
- Go to micro-film room to find images of news reports
- “Vigils”
- Showing the sky, the open space
- Dennis Shepard monologues, images of sky/what he’s talking about framing him
- “The Word”: religious symbols, iconography for each denomination
- “Funeral”: Snow
- Trial – audience listening to this recording, still projecting image of title? Of Aaron? Or lights down, just listening to voice
- Starting the show with images of Laramie, landscape, entering theater as entering Laramie
- Not going for obvious images, things referenced in text
- Want to see the fence when they talk about the fence, not like the railroad (we don’t need to see a railroad)
- General rule: If a moment has one projection, it’s there when the title comes up. Because they are individual moments of theater, they can signify cutting from scene to scene, cinematic
- Fred Phelps – angels take over projections of signs
- Look back at visual research, abstract images even, bringing out emotion
- Example: “Easier Said than Done” – being an outsider in the community, what image would resonate with that
- “A Scarf” – having contrast with “The Word,” Christian images?
- Assigning particular images – Akari will look for pictures of Laramie landscape, Emily will look for Christian iconography and Fred Phelps, Jake will find snow and angels.

Design Meeting Notes 3

-Tectonic Theatre Project website has a link to the Laramie Project “online community” à no one has really used it for anything

-includes clips from the Tectonic Theatre Project’s production of Laramie, 10 Years Later

-did people in Laramie actually have relations with same-sex partners? à bisexuality has been mentioned by Doc O’Connor, Shannon, Jen, etc.

-other people in Laramie in the play allude to there being a homosexual presence in the town that no one talks about

-Henderson and McKinney beat Matt with a gun à didn’t shoot him

-documentary mentions that he was beat over the head 18 times with a 357 Magnum

-Elana read that they had the gun because they were planning on robbing someone but the plan was foiled

-projections not used to “set the scene”

-we can also set the scene with ourselves à e.g, in the Fireside bar, people could set the scene on stage, we can just be other patrons at the bar

-Emily: we represent Laramie, but we project things that are not Laramie (e.g. Fred Phleps, etc.)

-Charlie: the aestheic of project will allude back to television and the way these events were portrayed in the news

-this could be a point of entry à the media

-showing the titles of each moment

-they could be announced as well (Charlie)

-Jake and Joe think that the moment title could be displayed at all times

-where are there points where we can “block” the projections

-the projectors can also be set up in a way so that we do not stand in front of the image

-we can use projections as a way of placing us in an environment

-Akari: thinking a lot about lighting and casting shadows, who’s faceless and who wants to be faceless à metaphorical shadow cast over Laramie by the event

-what would a vigil look like? How do candles light a face? à can only see some of people’s faces

-Akari presented some visual research that evoked the Western

-Laramie also described as an old-type Western town

-Emily: playing the most important character, Shadow

-Elana: barrage of media outside of the theater à will form people’s judgments à but make the space of the theater the space of the town

-Joe: maybe the media will be represented by “static”

-Ethan: once you get into the theater space, maybe you are in Laramie?

-Tectonic Theatre Project members don’t necessarily have to be a separate entitiy from Laramie

-inside of the theater space is just the perspective of Laramie, outside of the theater space is just the perspective of outside of Laramie (e.g., media)

-maybe use projections, too, to just present perspectives from the outside of Laramie (e.g., reporter, Fred Phelps, etc.)

-Emily, Akari, Jake will take on projection design à will come up with a synthesis of everyone’s ideas

New Details Emerge in Shepard Case

This is from an article based on interviews 20/20 did with McKinney and Henderson in 2004. Really shocking. Definitely read the comments too. Some people back up what is expressed (that the crime had everything to do with drugs and little to do with Matt being gay, but that the defense decided to make that 'gay panic' their motive because they thought it would absolve them...)

New Details Emerge in Matthew Shepard Murder

Other comments totally decry the report, saying it's completely false and shoddy journalism. I think this is the kind of thing we could maybe include outside the theater? If we're going with the "outside forces coming into Laramie" idea.

Also this is a song about Matt with some video/audio of Laramie. It's not that great, but at 4:37, they shown something I haven't heard before.

A Website About the Events

http://matthewshepard.jeff-reys.com/

Clearly someone's personally developed website that recounts the events and details surrounding the attack and death. Some pictures of people involved including Kristen Price and Bill McKinney.
